Florida Soil Is Tough

Florida sand and our brutal heat make growing food in Central Florida challenging.  Most of us watch our plants shrivel into dry, brittle sticks instead of our mind’s vision of lush greens and bright-colored vegetables.

Nevertheless, some of you have figured it out. And some of us want to learn.

Our Gardening Vision

We want to have a training garden rather than a community garden where we section off the larger lot into smaller individual gardens.

The explicit purpose of our garden is to educate visitors and demonstrate the best practices for gardening in Central Florida. Those interested in growing their own food can visit the garden, learn through observation or perhaps workshops, and then take their newly acquired knowledge home and apply it to their own backyard gardens.

In addition, our gardening team would be a resource for those with issues at home.  We would visit their gardens, help identify the underlying problems, and give suggestions on what to do next.

Our End Goal

“Give a man a fish and feed him for a day.  Teach him how to fish and feed him for a lifetime.”

We want to teach people to fish. There’s something dignified and satisfying about feeding yourself and those you love through hard work and effort. Our gardening team will make this a possibility for others.
